Meet the Need
MTN is a 501(c) (3) non-profit, faith-based organization that is committed to helping homeless men start a new life in Jesus Christ. Most of the men who come to MTN are just getting out of jail or prison.
Rene´ Alvarez, who co-founded MTN with his wife Jane, knows from personal experience the difficulties men face upon regaining their freedom after being incarcerated for any length of time. Many of these men are unable to cope with this transition and are sadly soon returned to their "home" behind bars. This is not the plan God had in mind when He created them. MTN's goal is to get them back on God's plan by a developing process which includes regular daily Bible Study and prayer in a home-like environment. After an initial, personal consultation with an intake counselor each new applicant completes an application and signs a statement stipulating program rules and a housing agreement.
MTN can currently house a maximum of 48 men in 6 residence recovery homes; a headquarters residence in Hoschton GA and 5 group homes, one in Winder, three in Lawrenceville, and one in Duluth. Assignments to homes are made primarily on the basis of proximity to work and/or terms of release. MTN assists in every way possible to help program participants find work through its growing network of employer and church contacts. In the final analysis, however, success depends on the desire and persistence of the individual. MTN also tries to help with transportation when drivers are available.
MTN wants to see men go through the program and begin to get on their feet, both spiritually and financially. To help meet this critical need, MTN is partnering with men’s groups in local churches to provide mentors to each of the men in the recovery program. This is where 12Stone men are making a difference in the lives of men at MTN. At the present time 5 men from 12Stone have committed to making contact with an accountability partner from MTN at least once a week; a phone call, meet for a cup of coffee, or invite them to attend church with them.
A weekly relapse prevention class is led every Tuesday evening at 7:00 PM by a professionally trained counselor, Pastor Bob Vann, who also serves on MTN’s Board of Directors.
Several men from 12Stone have been driving to Hoschton for their weekly meetings for the past several months and several MTN men have been regularly attending the 12Stone Friday Morning Men’s Group. Last, but not least, until MTN men are able to find a regular church home of their own, attendance is required at their house church in Hoschton, where some men from 12Stone have also visited.
Anyone with questions or an interest in helping should call Russell Gray, the 12Stone coordinator for Meet the Need Ministry Inc., at 404 906 2681.
